1. Can you tell us where you are from and how you first got introduced to EDM?

Yesenia – Im originally from San Diego but have been living in Colorado for 10 years! I first got introduced to EDM when I heard “Seek Bromance” by Avicii. I remember being so hooked and wanting more. I was quick to buy tickets to Deadmau5’s headline show at Petco Park, where Avicii was the direct support. It’s hard to describe the feeling I had that night, but it’s safe to say that’s what got me addicted to EDM.

2. What were the pivotal moments in your life where you decided to join the music workforce?

Yesenia – To be quite frank, I didn’t even know there was a music industry, and I never had this dream to work in music. I love EDM so much and never saw working in it as any possibility… let alone making any money! I’ll never forget planning a girls’ trip to Tomorrowland in 2018 and having Christina Vessa join us, who is now my business partner. I didn’t know her well at the time, but I knew we both had a shared passion for EDM. Some of our more memorable sets were Kayzo, Slushii, and Barely Alive b2b PhaseOne b2b Virtual Riot.

A year later, when Christina had the idea of launching Dubstep FBI, we never intended to join the music industry. We just had so much love for dubstep that we wanted to host a platform where we could pyblish our friends’ mixes, do festival meetups, and coliectively share this music we love so much. A moment I’ll never forget is when Shaq DM’d us saying he loved what we were doing and to keep going. I knew at that moment that we were onto something special.

3. We see that you are quite involved with Blazy Susan and Dubstep FBI. That’s awesome! Could you briefly describe how you got started in these companies?

Yesenia – My business partner Christina and launched Dubstep FBI in January 2020, right before Covid hit. We didn’t know our world was about to go into lockdown, but if Covid never happened, we wouldn’t be where we are today because the lockdown launched us.

We were publishing guest mixes on Riot Control Radio, hosting livestreams, and publishing some of our first articles on our WordPress blog… there was so much unknown, and we wanted to give the underground a platform to showcase their music during so much uncertainty.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Dubstep FBI would be where it’s at today. Blazy Susan, on the other hand, is where I work full-time and sell directly to dispensaries, smoke shops, convenience stores, you name it! I met the Founder and CEO, Will Breakell, at a dubstep show in Denver, and we shared similar passions when it came to sales, entrepreneurship, etc.

I’m a huge fan of Blazy Susan and wanted to find a way to get involved, share my startup experience, and help the company scale. Also, who doesn’t love Blazy Susan products? It’s a blessing to have a job and a business with many cross-collaboration opportunities.

4. Do you feel as if the entrepreneurial background you possess helped you grow as a music professional? If so, in which ways?

Yesenia – I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, but trust me when I say I was nowhere near like my parents. The thought of even starting a business, let alone talking to customers, absolutely terrified me. I actually wanted to be a computer science major, make code, and avoid as much human interaction as possible. But once I started pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and surrounding myself with people who were smarter than me, that is what helped me grow as a music professional.

5. What are your future goals and aspirations with these companies and for yourself?

Yesenia – I want to continue adding value to others and help others achieve their goals and dreams. If I can’t help others win, then I feel like my life has no purpose. I grew up with a lot of insecurities and felt I wouldn’t amount to anything. I hope that with Dubstep FBI and Blazy Susan, I can encourage others to keep going and not listen to the negative voices because, trust me, if I can do it, so can everyone.

6. What advice would you give to independent artists who are in the building process of their careers?

Yesenia – Simple: celebrate the small wins and have gratitude for where you are now. You gained 1 new follower?

That’s a win. It doesn’t all have to be these crazy achievements. You may not be exactly where you want to be yet, but most successful artists are a “10-year overnight success” – keep going and stay consistent.
